Every once an a while you read or hear something that strikes you, and evokes a special feeling in you. I just had on of those moments.
While eating dinner by myself (my family is out doing all kinds of extracurricular activities) I downloaded a couple of podcasts of "the hour" hosted by George Stroumboulopoulos which appears nightly on CBC. I was watching an interview with Dr. Dave Williams, who is a Canadian Astronaut.
Of course there is the usual array of questions about "what is it like in outer space?", and "what is the neatest thing you have seen?"
Dr. Williams is answering one of these such questions, telling a story about a space walk and what he could see and he says this...
"People ask me which planet would you like to visit in the solar system? and my answer is the Earth... I love it... It is a great place"
This statement struck me. As a man who has lived in space, and lived under water, and has the knowledge and potential to be apart of further exploration, and the experience to know that one day man will venture out farther and farther into the solar system, and his response is that he would like to explore earth more. A place we all are at this moment, and a place we all have access to.
In traveling extensively across North America, and in recent years to Australia and Spain, I understand what he is saying, and whole heartedly agree. As I stare up at the banner image at the top of this page, I am reminded too that we don't necessarily need to hop on a plane to do so. We can just get up off the couch and walk out our front doors.
To view this great interview, you can download the podcast in iTunes, or visit the hour's webpage on cbc.ca.
