Rogers Will Carry the iPhone 3GS on June 19, 2009Assuming that everyone reading this has already heard that Apple today announced the new and improved iPhone 3G S, I will only give a brief rundown of the new functionality. Although much the same look as the existing iPhone 3G, the new hardware is faster, the battery lasts longer, has a 3 MegaPixel Autofocus camera with Video support, and built-in GPS with compass among other features. Although this new hardware will be a vast improvement, The iPhone OS 3.0 software that will run on the new device will also be able to be installed on previous versions of the iPhone, and the iPhone Touch will be available June 17th, and will give users many of the cool features that were demonstrated at todays WWDC Keynote Address, such as copy and paste, voice dialing, MMS messaging etc...

During the keynote, Canadian viewers were excited to see that not only would Rogers make the device available on June 19th, but they would also be offering Tethering to use your iPhone as a Modem for your laptop computer immediately as well, unlike AT&T. Many questions remained however in regards to pricing, plans, and if there would be a cost for the new features.

Rogers Wireless As I mentioned last week, there was some excitement in the blogosphere about Rogers updating their wireless data rates on February 5th. Well, as that date is now upon us, those rates new rates have indeed become a reality, however it is the fine print that spoils most people's excitement.

"Important: This plan includes unlimited on-device mobile browsing only.
Plan is available on select phones only (PDAs such as Blackberry or
Windows Mobile devices, PC cards and non-Rogers certified devices are
not eligible). Data usage incurred on ineligible devices, incurred
while tethering (using device as wireless modem for laptop) or incurred
using non-Rogers (3rd party) applications downloaded to your device
will be subject to pay-per-use charges of 5 cents/KB."

Now, I wasn't looking for the ability to tether my laptop to my iPhone for $7 a month, but I would wish that my wife and I could use between 10 and 20 MBs of data per month for things like Google Maps, Email, and other little productivity tools.

I have been pretty happy with Rogers through the years, but promoting WAP websites as new and exciting technology is just getting a little ridiculous. And to visit WAP sites on 3G? There should be a law against this!

Rogers WirelessI have mentioned in the past that back in December I got what I thought was a not too badly priced data plan from Rogers for my iPhone. I mean it is all relative, but after paying $25 a month for 5MB of data for the past few years, having a 1GB plan for $65 was almost like winning the lottery.
So the chatter this week, that Rogers is about to implement some changes to their data plans comes with a little excitement. Most of all, because I will be able to justify getting my wife a data plan for her iPhone. There are a bunch of cool apps for things like mileage tracking which I have found to be very useful.
The whole web apps only thing makes a lot more sense when you are on an unlimited plan, but who knows how that will all change when th iPhone SDK is released.
